This Beaux-Arts building designed by Eugène Payette in 1912 has great significance in Montreal’s religious and cultural history. Strangely, plans to repurpose it are dragging on. The building has been deteriorating slowly but surely since 2005 (broken door, graffiti, water infiltration, insufficient monitoring, etc.). Although the Quebec Ministry of Culture recently announced the formation of a study committee, we must remain extremely vigilant, given the repeated setbacks going back more than 10 years (UQAM, Le Vivier).

 

Update by Heritage Montreal (1 February 2016)

On January 31, 2016, Minister of Culture and Communications Hélène David and Montréal Mayor Denis Coderre, announced that the former Bibliothèque Saint-Sulpice, whose sale in a classified ad on the Ministry of Transports’ website had been suspended, will be returned to the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec. The library will be restored and returned to its original vocation in addition to becoming a meeting and creative space for adolescents. (Read more)
