The Veterans’ Area was first established after WW2 within the confines of the Veterans’ Land Act (1942) which was a part of Canada’s veteran rehabilitation program. The veterans were encouraged to buy small holdings (1/2 acre lots) with veteran homes. Originally the lot size was seen as the means to allow veterans to save money by growing their own vegetables and fruit. As time passed, the program evolved. By 1950, the veterans were now able to buy land and build their own homes. Over the years the properties changed hands and some of the 1/2 acre lots got divided. In 2005, a study was done by a consulting firm Patri-Arch along with the City of Pointe-Claire, the minister of culture and communications, Quebec and Montreal. The recommendations for the Veterans’ Area are as follows: Care should be taken to preserve the overall size of lots, natural setting and simplicity of architecture. The sub-division of large lots and the demolition of the most typical houses in the area should be avoided. These recommendations were not followed. In 2010, Pointe-Claire developed a new Urban Plan, allowing the division of lots and large homes to be built on this divisions. To date the Veterans’ Area has already lost much of it’s character and if it is allowed to continue it will soon be unrecognizable. This area in Pointe-Claire is bordered by the avenues Maywood, Braebrook, Delmar and includes St. Louis Ave.
