Saint-Bernardin-de-Sienne Church was built in 1955, as part of the important wave of church construction in Montreal in the 1950s. The church is modern in design, with a reinterpretation of traditional forms such as the ogival arches and the traditional cross-shaped plan. The interior of the church is also noteworthy, notably the stained glass windows, the furniture and the works of art. The shape of the church, and its main vault housing the nave, is remarkable.

“With good visibility, particularly from the metropolitan highway along the site, this church is an important landmark in the sector because of the slender profile of its spire and its white concrete veil roof, which stand out in the landscape. A dominant element of the institutional core of Saint-Michel, the Saint-Bernardin-de-Sienne Church stands out from its neighborhood by its monumentality accentuated by the landscape characteristics of its site and its assertive modern architectural facture.” (Énoncé de l’intérêt patrimonial de l’église Saint-Bernardin-de-Sienne, Ville de Montréal, 2014 – In French).

On January 27, 2019, a fire destroyed the rectory and the roof of the building collapsed on itself. It was considered a total loss. 3 weeks later, on February 14, a second fire damaged the church; although quickly brought under control, evidence found at the scene suggested that it was an arson fire.

In December 2019, the church Christ en action évangélisation (C.A.E.) acquired the building. The community plans to demolish the Saint-Bernard-de-Sienne church in order to construct a new place of worship starting in 2024.

In 2024, the City of Montreal removed the church from the list of buildings of architectural and heritage interest to allow for its demolition.
