Montreal’s 19th- and early-20th-century iron fences and gates are in jeopardy! An example is the fence around Saint-Patrick’s Basilica, built during the latter half of the 19th century along Saint-Alexandre Street and De la Gauchetière Street West, which shows a significant lack of maintenance. Many of the stone crowns on the fence’s columns, in the Gothic style, are missing, and several decorative elements of the wrought-iron gate have disappeared, not to mention the advance stage of rust.
