Ravenscrag is an imposing bourgeois mansion built in the Neo-Renaissance style between 1861 and 1864 for Sir Hugh Allan, then the richest man in Canada. It was donated to McGill University in 1943 and converted into a psychiatric hospital, the Allan Memorial Institute. The Institute recently announced that it is considering moving out of the property, in the wake of the relocation of Royal Victoria Hospital. The terms of the original bequest state that if ever the mansion ceases to be used as a hospital, it will revert to Allan’s descendants. Those descendants now want to convert it into luxury condos. Ravenscrag would make a wonderful residence/museum dedicated to the Square Mile.
