Max Kalman was a Canadian architect born in Montreal of Romanian parents. After working in New York and studying architecture at Columbia University, he graduated from McGill University’s School of Architecture in 1931, during the Great Depression.

This did not prevent him from beginning his practice with small projects, making him known by the mid-1930s for his high quality design and diverse architectural services.

Some of his works can still be seen in Montreal: the Workmen’s Circle Centre (now the Sala Rosa, 4848 St. Laurent Boulevard) and the Jewish People’s School (now the École des premières lettres, corner of Waverly and Fairmount).

This house was built in 1950 and designed in a simple and functional style, reflecting the practice of its designer. It was inhabited by the architect and his family.

An architectural jewel in the heart of Westmount that is unfortunately plastered today, obviously a victim of a lack of maintenance. Although it is located in an area of exceptional heritage value, as recognized by the City, we are concerned about its future. Will the City of Westmount ensure that this exceptional architectural landmark is preserved and restored?

News

After a major fire, this heritage home in Westmount was severely damaged. In an Instagram post shared in April 2026, the contractor states that the building was restored while preserving 60% of its original value.

“Each stone was dismantled, numbered, and then reinstalled to respect the original architecture. Behind the preserved façade, the interior and rear of the building were completely renovated and expanded. The residence, designed in 1950 by Max Kalman, has thus been restored.”
