The building lost its fire station function in 1963 and it underwent major work in 1964 to accommodate the former Notre-Dame library of the public libraries network. This place kept its function until 2008, when the new Saint-Henri library opened its doors across the street, and it has been vacant ever since.
The heritage interest of the building lies in the quality of its facade volumetry, inspired by the Second Empire style, despite the many works aimed at integrating the use of public library in the preservation of its integrity over the decades. Its interest also lies in the uniqueness of its general volume, compared to the surrounding buildings, and its location on a street corner, which makes it a landmark in the sector.
