“Built between 1851 and 1861 in an agricultural area at the eastern end of the island of Montreal, the Bleau house was a farmhouse. It has maintained this vocation; moreover, for a century, it was home to seven generations of the Bleau family.” (Notice of the Conseil du patrimoine, November 13, 2008 – in French)
“The property remained in the Bleau family until 1960, when it was acquired by the congregation of the Little Daughters of St. Joseph. The City of Montreal became the owner in 1971. With the creation of the Pointe-aux-Prairies regional park in 1982, the house and a good part of the former Bleau family land were acquired by the Montreal Urban Community. Restored in the early 2000s, the Bleau House became the property of the City of Montreal in 2002.” (Répertoire du patrimoine culturel du Québec – in French).
Since then, visual artists have been housed there, but it has been vacant for several years.
The Société historique de Rivière-des-Prairies (in French) has made representations to elected officials and civil servants in recent years to have the Bleau House maintained and preserved. On November 13, 2008, the Conseil du patrimoine de Montréal recommended its protection. It was cited by the City of Montreal in December 2008. A post on the Facebook page of the Société historique RdP (in French), made on November 8, 2020, recalls the importance of this house in the heritage landscape of the borough as well as the lack of general maintenance and the rapid deterioration of this historic house.
