The building, abandoned since 1999, is currently for sale. It was deemed “surplus” when it was vacated by the Chinese Hospital, whose main pavilion is located on Viger Street in Old Montreal. Significant upgrades are required, particularly to the heating and air conditioning systems. In 2010, the Montreal Health and Social Services Agency (ASSS) proposed converting the building into a residential facility for Inuit patients, but the proposal was met with community opposition.

Several projects have since been rejected: a housing facility for the Indigenous community in 2010, and a multi-sector community center in 2015. The building was eventually acquired by the City of Montreal in 2019 for the development of social and community housing.

However, during the four years following the acquisition of the building, no redevelopment project was able to move forward due to a lack of funding. According to an article in La Presse, the project did not qualify for various grant programs aimed at supporting the construction of affordable housing.

In 2024, the City of Montreal decided to put the building up for sale, raising concerns among local communities who view this move as a threat to the creation of social housing previously promised by the municipality.
