A demolition request for the century-old Tudor-style greystone building at 2190–2198 Sainte-Catherine Ouest is to be studied by the City of Montreal on October 23. The developers say they intend to keep the façade and build a 14-storey block above. Is this a new strategy by Montreal builders who want to put up condos everywhere: “Let’s keep the façade and put a tower on top”? It’s very sad to see the destruction of such an old, noble greystone on one of Montreal’s main thoroughfares. Even if the façade is kept, it’s going to be like something out of Disneyworld.
