This period was marked by significant population growth and signaled the beginning of the municipality&#8217;s urbanization. Due to the rapid population increase on the tip of the peninsula, the parish of Notre-Dame-des-Champs was established in 1957. Repentigny also attained city status that same year. After religious services were held in a small summer chapel and in local school gymnasiums, the Notre-Dame-des-Champs Church was built in 1963, based on plans by Roger D\u2019Astous and his associate Jean-Paul Pothier. It is an exceptional work whose forms have inspired a wide range of interpretations: King David\u2019s lyre, praying hands, a ship\u2019s hull, a handbag, and more. Notre-Dame-des-Champs stands out among D\u2019Astous\u2019s churches for its use of a concealed steel structure. The architect typically favored concrete or glued-laminated timber and often left the structural framework of his churches exposed. In this case, however, D\u2019Astous chose a lightweight steel frame because the soil in Repentigny\u2014composed of a thick clay layer\u2014would not have supported a heavy masonry structure.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"736\" data-end=\"1270\">The church\u2019s cedar shingle roof, a major contributor to the building\u2019s distinctive character, dates back to its inauguration and is now in need of replacement. The shingles are in an advanced state of deterioration\u2014fragments are scattered around the church grounds, and signs of water infiltration have begun to appear in the nave. The parish hopes to undertake the roof restoration but lacks the funds to begin the work. The estimated cost of the restoration exceeds $3 million, with the parish responsible for covering $1.1 million.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1272\" data-end=\"1631\">The church is listed in the <a class=\"cursor-pointer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.patrimoine-culturel.gouv.qc.ca\/rpcq\/detail.do?methode=consulter&amp;id=167874&amp;type=bien\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"1300\" data-end=\"1409\">Quebec Inventory of Places of Worship<\/a> and has been ranked as a site of outstanding importance (A) by the <a class=\"cursor-pointer\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"1477\" data-end=\"1560\">Quebec Religious Heritage Council (CPRQ)<\/a>, but it does not benefit from any official heritage protection status.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1633\"
