During the store\u2019s second expansion in 1930-31, a 600-seat restaurant was opened on the ninth floor. Inaugurated in early 1931, the restaurant also hosted various events that further enhanced Eaton\u2019s renown. Legend has it that the dining room was a replica of the \u00cele-de-France ocean liner, which was not exactly the case, although its architect was indeed inspired by naval forms, which gave the restaurant its ocean liner style known as Streamline Moderne. The French architect, Jacques Carlu (1890-1976), also designed the Palais de Chaillot in Paris. The real estate developer Ivanho\u00e9-Cambridge purchased the building to turn the former Eaton\u2019s department store into a shopping centre. This transformation led to the demolition of the restaurant\u2019s kitchen, although some of the old equipment was saved and stored with an eye to eventually reopening the kitchen. In 2000, in response to an application from Heritage Montreal, the Minister of Culture classified the restaurant\u2019s dining room and its foyer and promenade well as the furniture, murals and bas-reliefs as a historic monument.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n\n\n\t<section class=\"full-width-text  \">\n\t\t<div class=\"container-fluid\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"row\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-sm-10 offset-sm-1 col-md-6 offset-md-3\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"text-ctn\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"title\">Current events <\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"content\"><p>At present, this magnificent and emblematic site is dormant, and as the years pass it fades ever more from memory. This situation could threaten its conservation and deprive the population of the opportunity to use it in the future. In 2018 and 2019, Docomomo Qu\u00e9bec organized a public meeting and a roundtable to explore the challenges of reopening Eaton\u2019s ninth-floor restaurant. In 2019, a citizen involved in local heritage preservation also launched a petition to demand the site be reopened.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2023, Ivanhoe Cambridge, the owner of the Eaton Centre, announced the reopening of the iconic Le 9e restaurant in the coming months.<\/p>\n<p>Work is underway to redevelop the former Art Deco restaurant to enhance this unique location. Its iconic 1930s d\u00e9cor was restored and rehabilitated to preserve its heritage value, thanks to the collaboration of several professionals from the built heritage conservation field.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n\n\n\t<section class=\"full-width-text  \">\n\t\t<div class=\"container-fluid\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"row\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-sm-10 offset-sm-1 col-md-6 offset-md-3\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"text-ctn\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"title\">Actions of Heritage Montr\u00e9al\t<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"content\"><p>In 1999,<a href=\"https:\/\/hmtl.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Classement-Eaton-9e.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> through a letter addressed to Minister Maltais<\/a>, Heritage Montreal demanded the classification of the restaurant of the ninth floor.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, H\u00e9ritage Montr\u00e9al has reiterated its confidence in this protected status and the vigilance of the ministry&#8217;s professionals. However, we expressed our growing concern to the owner, Ivanhoe Cambridge, as we did publicly by designating it as a priority site at the launch of our Memento platform in 2015, as time passed without any plans to reopen it being announced.<\/p>\n<p>In April 2024, a quarter of a century after the closure of the Eaton chain of stores, the restaurant in its St. Catherine Street department store, inspired by the dining rooms of the ocean liners of the interwar period, is coming back to life after too long a hibernation.
