A stone house was erected that year on the vast plot of land that had been bequeathed by lawyer C\u00f4me-S\u00e9raphin Cherrier and his wife to the Sisters of Providence. In 1900, this structure was replaced by the large building that stands there today.<\/p>\n<p>The Institute was devoted to teaching deaf and mute girls. Despite the construction of the body of the building in seven phases, over a period of 73 years, the incorporation of all of its constituent parts into an overall \u201cH\u201d-plan, the continuity of the volumes and the choice of materials produced a remarkably harmonious building. The buildings, for the most part, made of roughly carved Montreal greystone with dressed stone for the ornamentation.<\/p>\n<p>Designed by Father Joseph Michaud des Clercs de Saint-Viateur, the building is an example of Second Empire architecture, with its mansard roof and corner pavilions, a popular style in Montreal in the 1870s. He grafted onto the centre of the building the avant-corps of the entrance, decorated with pilasters to give the composition a monumental scale. The dome adorning the roof is reminiscent of the domes on March\u00e9 Bonsecours and H\u00f4tel-Dieu. The fenestration decreases in height from floor to floor, a common approach at the time. The building still boasts stunning wooden verandas, evocative of its convent origins.<\/p>\n<p>A chapel sits at the centre of the building. It houses a work by painter Georges Delfosse that represents the miraculous translation of the image of Notre-Dame-du-Bon-Conseil, the patron of the chapel. The interior of the Institut des Sourdes-Muettes, with its rich wood panelling, was relatively well conserved until the site was abandoned. The Berri Street entrance features a magnificent golden oak stairway with a ramp and balustrade in red oak.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n\n\n\t<section class=\"full-width-text  dark-version\">\n\t\t<div class=\"container-fluid\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"row\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-sm-10 offset-sm-1 col-md-6 offset-md-3\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"text-ctn\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"title\">Threats<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"content\"><p>Sold to the Corporation d\u2019h\u00e9bergement du Qu\u00e9bec in 1979, the building was home to the Agence de la sant\u00e9 et des services sociaux de Montr\u00e9al until its dissolution in 2015. This period saw the construction of parking lots on the site, and the Berri Street entrances were modified, leading to the disappearance of the park on Saint-Denis Street. The Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 d\u2019histoire du Plateau-Mont-Royal (SHP) made an official application for classification in 2015 and then again in 2017, but it was refused. Despite many interventions by citizens, elected officials and experts to protect and reclassify the building, it remains vacant to this day.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n\n\n\t<section class=\"full-width-text  \">\n\t\t<div class=\"container-fluid\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"row\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-sm-10 offset-sm-1 col-md-6 offset-md-3\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"text-ctn\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"title\">Current events <\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"content\"><p>En 2019, the Ministry of Health and Social Services, along with the Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 qu\u00e9b\u00e9coise des infrastructures, offered the City the opportunity to purchase the building. The City of Montr\u00e9al stated its intention to develop reconversion scenarios for both the Institut des Sourdes-Muettes and the H\u00f4pital des S\u0153urs de la Mis\u00e9ricorde before deciding whether to acquire these now largely vacant properties.<\/p>\n<p>In June 2021, the City of Montr\u00e9al <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lapresse.ca\/actualites\/grand-montreal\/2021-06-03\/metamorphose-en-vue-pour-deux-grands-batiments-patrimoniaux.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">presented its redevelopment vision for the Sourdes-Muettes site<\/a>. The Government of Qu\u00e9bec owns the complex. Plans call for it to be transferred to a private developer, who will carry out restoration, reconfiguration, and adaptive reuse work.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, June 16, 2025, Montr\u00e9al and Qu\u00e9bec announced that the developer Residia had won the call for proposals to redevelop the former Institut des Sourdes-Muettes, located on Saint-Denis Street. The selected project includes two towers\u201417 and 25 storeys\u2014at the corner of Berri and Cherrier, and will be completed in multiple phases. The sale agreement includes provisions for social housing. The project may still be adjusted before receiving final approval.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/montreal.ca\/evenements\/assemblee-publique-de-consultation-redeveloppement-de-linstitution-des-sourdes-muettes-96278\">public consultation<\/a> organized by the borough was held on August 26, 2025, to present the project to the public.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n\n\n\t<section class=\"full-width-text  \">\n\t\t<div class=\"container-fluid\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"row\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-sm-10 offset-sm-1 col-md-6 offset-md-3\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"text-ctn\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"title\">Actions of Heritage Montr\u00e9al<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"content\"><p data-start=\"56\" data-end=\"393\">This remarkable institutional complex, built of grey stone with its iconic dome and several outstanding interiors, was carelessly decommissioned by the Government of Qu\u00e9bec, which has only recently come to realize the site&#8217;s potential. The government is now working with the City of Montr\u00e9al to repurpose it in response to housing needs.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"395\" data-end=\"776\">For several years, H\u00e9ritage Montr\u00e9al has submitted multiple letters, briefs, and resolutions concerning various surplus hospital and educational buildings in Montr\u00e9al, notably including the Institut des Sourdes-Muettes. H\u00e9ritage Montr\u00e9al continues to closely monitor the file and advocate with public authorities to ensure the site is requalified and its heritage values respected.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"778\" data-end=\"1305\">Drawing on its experience with the Royal Victoria Hospital\u2014which was also decommissioned in 2015\u2014the Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 qu\u00e9b\u00e9coise des infrastructures was mandated to launch a call for proposals. The June 16, 2025 announcement of the selected project marks a significant milestone. At last, after years of good intentions or indifference, something concrete is taking shape! H\u00e9ritage Montr\u00e9al has duly noted statements from elected officials indicating that the project will undergo public consultation and review by the Heritage Council.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1307\" data-end=\"1948\">At a time when Montr\u00e9al is experiencing an epidemic of fa\u00e7adism and aggressive densification, particularly downtown and in Griffintown, it is encouraging to see that the main structure of this heritage complex will be preserved\u2014even if it ends up encased in new construction, particularly along Saint-Denis Street. This large-scale project represents a first opportunity to see the principles of intelligent densification, as promoted in the new Urban and Mobility Plan (PUM), put into action.
